Oligomers in food packaging

14June2018 10:00 - 11:00

PhD defence ceremony

Oligomers are substances consisting of a few monmeric units, which can be formed during the production of polymers or when polymers interact with aqeuous solvents. As oligomers can migrate from polyester food packaging to food, they must be included in the risk assessment for the respective food contact materials. Maria Hoppe investigates a number of polyesters used as food packaging materials. The aim is to identify the oligomers in different polyesters, assess their migration behaviour and derive their diffusion characteristics.
