Even though we expected that the nice weather would hold a lot of alumni back to come to our event, an impressive amount of 120 alumni showed up.
The first alumni arrived around 17:30 at Kriterion and enjoyed a drink that they could order from the two consumption-coins they got at the registration desk. After catching up with some old and meeting some new friends, the guests took place in the very comfortable seats of the Piet Meerburg zaal (K1).
Nienke Fleuren, member of the board of the ‘Amsterdamse Universiteits-Vereniging’, opened our event, followed by a short lecture by prof. dr. Patricia Pister (professor Media and Film Studies, UvA). She discussed the films Stepford Wives, Blade runner, Ex Machina and other films that touch upon topics such as A.I., (digitized) emotions, feminism and embodied cognition.
Without giving away any spoilers, Patricia talked us through the film of the evening, Her (2013, Spike Jonze), and amongst others told us to pay attention to the special color-pallet that is used in the film. Indeed, during the film, we experienced two hours of matching warm colors and challenging topics.
After the film, Brain and Cognitive scientists, Psychobiologists, the alumni from Media Studies and alumni from many other disciplines engaged in a real interdisciplinary discussion, while sipping and chips dipping. The discussion and different views on the film and topic brought many new insights and more food for thought.
After another round of drinks offered by the AUV, part of the organizers were the last ones to leave at around midnight. All together it was a very successful event, thanks to the boards of the organizing circles, the AUV, Kriterion and all AUV-members that were there.
