Prof. H.W. Volberda (1964) has been appointed professor of Strategic Management & Innovation at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of Business and Economics. The chair is part of the Amsterdam Business School (ABS).

Strategy and innovation expert Henk Volberda’s research focuses on various themes such as hyper-competition, technological disruption, new business models, strategic flexibility, management innovation and new forms of organisation. With Volberda’s appointment, the UvA has widened the scope of the strategy research carried out at the ABS. His extensive knowledge will contribute greatly to research into open innovation, digital transformation, leadership and entrepreneurship. 

Volberda’s chair will be part of the ABS’s International Strategy & Marketing section, which coordinates teaching and learning in the area of strategy, international management, marketing and related economic issues. Volberda will teach within the ABS, and more specifically within the various tracks of the Master’s programme in Business Administration and several Executive Master’s programmes. 

About Henk Volberda

Henk Volberda has been professor of Strategic Management and Business Policy at the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM), Erasmus University Rotterdam since 1997. Alongside this chair, Volberda has held several executive positions, including that of vice-dean and chair of the department of Strategic Management. Moreover, he was director of Knowledge Transfer at RSM, programme director of the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM) and editor-in-chief of the magazine RSM Discovery

Volberda holds various executive and advisory positions. He is a member of the supervisory board of NXP Semiconductors Netherlands and a member of the scientific advisory committee of the Netherlands Defense Academy. In addition, he is an expert member of the World Economic Forum and a fellow of the European Academy of Management. Previously, he was, among other things, a board member of the Netherlands Centre for Social Innovation and Vice-President Research of the European Academy of Management (EURAM). 

Volberda is a member of the editorial board of, among others, the Journal of Strategy and ManagementLong Range PlanningManagement and Organization ReviewOrganization StudiesHolland Management Review and Maandblad voor Accountancy en Bedrijfseconomie. Volberda has held visiting scholarships at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and at Cass Business School in London. 

Volberda is the author of numerous books, including Strategic Management: Competitiveness and Globalization (Cengage Learning EMEA, 2011), which is used as a strategy textbook by various business schools across Europe. Also, several editions of his book Innovation 3.0: Slimmer managen, organiseren en werken have been published. Some of his other well-known titles that have received international acclaim are Building the Flexible Firm: How to Remain Competitive (Oxford University Press 1998), which has been published in several languages, and Rethinking Strategy (Sage, 2001). His most recent book is Reinventing Business Models: How Firms Cope with Disruption (Oxford University Press, 2018). His forthcoming book Innovatie Jij.nu (Vakmedia 2019) will appear later this year.

Volberda has published extensively in several international peer-reviewed journals, including Academy of Management JournalGlobal Strategy JournalJournal of International BusinessJournal of ManagementJournal of Management StudiesManagement ScienceOrganization ScienceStrategic Entrepreneurship Journal and Strategic Management Journal.For the fifth year in a row, Volberda has been included in the Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher list. In addition, he has received numerous awards for his research into organisational flexibility and strategic renewal, including the ERIM Impact Award, the Erasmus Research Award, the SAP Strategy Award and the prestigious Igor Ansoff Strategic Management Award.
