Martin Stokhof, professor of Philosophy of Language

Prof. M.J.B. Stokhof (1950) has been appointed professor of Philosophy of Language at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of Humanities, effective 1 January. Stokhof will combine this chair with his position as vice president of the European Research Council (ERC) and coordinator of the Social Science and Humanities domain. From 1998 to 2016, Stokhof also held the fulltime chair in Philosophy of Language.

Martin Stokhof is specialised in formal semantics and pragmatics. Together with fellow researcher Jeroen Groenendijk, he previously worked on the semantics of questions and developed a model for dynamic semantics. In recent years, he has primarily focused on the philosophy of semantics and on the work of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein.

Stokhof has been affiliated with the UvA since 1976. From 1998 to 2004, he was the scientific director of the UvA’s Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC). He was also, among other things, chair of the Humanities Division of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and one of the founders of the HERA consortium in which various European research funders in the field of the humanities collaborate.

Stokhof has authored a large number of publications and books. He is one of the authors of Logic, Language and Meaning (1982), a two-volume introduction to logic. In 2000 he published the textbook Taal en betekenis. Een inleiding in the taalfilosopfie (Language and Meaning: An Introduction to Philosophy of Language) and in 2002 the monograph World and Life as One. Ethics and Ontology in Wittgenstein’s Early Thought.
