Prof. B. ter Weel (1975) has been appointed professor of Economic Research and Policy at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of Economics and Business, effective 1 October. Ter Weel will combine this chair with his position as managing director of SEO Amsterdam Economics.

Bas ter Weel has extensive experience in the fields of applied economic research and policy analysis. His areas of expertise include, among other things, innovation, healthcare, financial markets, international relations, pensions and ageing issues. In recent years he has conducted policy research into labour market issues and education in particular.

As professor at the UvA, Ter Weel will focus on using economic insights to answer policy questions. His research will focus in particular on questions related to labour markets, education, healthcare, demography, social security and the economics of the public sector. Ter Weel will use his experience in practical and societally relevant research within the teaching and research programme of the Faculty of Economics and Business.

Ter Weel has been managing director of SEO Amsterdam Economics since 1 September. For the past nine years he has been affiliated to CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB), of which he became deputy director in 2013. Moreover, from 2011 until his appointment at the UvA, Ter Weel was professor of Economics at Maastricht University. Ter Weel is one of the editors of the academic journal De Economist.
