UvA rises in latest THE World Reputation Ranking

15 June 2017

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has risen to group 51-60 in the 2017 Times Higher Education Rankings, a list of 100 universities with the best reputations worldwide. Together with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), the UvA is the highest ranked Dutch university on the list. Last year, the UvA was ranked in group 61-70.

Times Higher Education (THE) annually determines the top 100 most powerful global university brands on the basis of the views of more than 10,000 experienced researchers from 137 countries. The researchers are given a questionnaire in which they offer their views on excellence in research and teaching within their disciplines and at institutions with which they are familiar.

Top 3

The top 3 remains unchanged from last year, with Harvard University ranked 1st followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2nd place and Stanford University in 3rd. A total of four Dutch universities are listed in the rankings: The UvA (51-60), TU Delft (51-60), Leiden University (81-90) and Utrecht University (81-90).

The top 100 universities by reputation are listed. From the 51nd spot, universities are listed in ranking groups instead of individual rankings because the differentials between institutions become narrow after the 50th spot.

Spin-off

The reputation ranking is a spin-off of the annual Times Higher Education World University Ranking, which is always released in the autumn. In the 2016-2017 edition the UvA is placed 63rd worldwide.
