Live translation makes Opening of the Academic Year more accessible

5 September 2017

This year the Opening of the Academic Year was made more accessible for international students and staff. Around 60 people used headsets to listen to the live translation of the event into English, which was provided for the first time.

international students attended the opening for a variety of reasons: to share in the celebrations, to engage with the wider UvA community or for specific speakers. Huiwen and Haoran from China came for the anniversary celebrations. They were hoping to hear some inspiring speeches and looking forward to the music.

First-year student Svetlana rom Bulgaria enjoyed the opening very much: 'I would reccommend attending the opening to everyone. I enjoyed the Pecha Kucha presentations, especially the one about lying, and the award of the lecturer of the year and the democratic way that was done.'

One of the goals of the UvA's Strategic Framework for Internationalisation is a better social integration of international staff and students. Making the Opening of the Academic Year accessible for the whole academic community is one of the intiatives designed to include international students and staff more fully in all aspects of university life.
